This Plunge Paper is designed to assist you with learning about other people and other perspectives. When we are not in the midst of a global pandemic, this assignment normally requires you to visit a culture other than your own. Because we are working toward social distancing as much a possible, the assignment for this class involves watching a film that represents a culture other than your own.

STEP ONE

Pick a film from the list below. Choose one which is about a people group that is a) historically marginalized AND b) not a part of your personal identity AND c) you have not seen before. If you’d like to perhaps try a different movie, you MUST get prior approval first (I almost never approve requests- try to choose from the list if you can!). Disclaimer: not all of these films are rated G content. Choose a film that matches your own personal convictions and which avoids personal triggers for you.

(note: I tried to make a list of free films, or those which are available on popular subscription channels. You do not need to spend money! Just find a film you can access for free!)

MOVIES (note: many of these films may depict graphic violence or worse. I recommend googling the title and the phrase “trigger warning” so you can be fairly warned. Take care of yourselves, friends. I’m happy to suggest more titles if you can’t find one here that doesn’t cause trauma to you— that’s important.)

STEP TWO

Write your paper. Include the section headers (these are the bolded words next to each bullet point)

  • SUMMARY: Include the film title, where you accessed the film, and an ORIGINAL summary of the film (note: DO NOT CUT/PASTE A SUMMARY FROM THE INTERNET). This can be simple and to the point, and does not need opinion or commentary at this point. Demonstrate that you watched the entire film.
  • REFLECTION: Reflect on your learning, what did you learn from watching this film? Share your thoughts about new ideas, changed ideas, insight that you did not have before. This is your reaction to the film. How did it make you feel?
  • CONNECTION: Connect what you learned to the critical concepts in the course: USE COURSE VOCABULARY- internalized oppression, social identity, gender identity, interracial relationships, Anti-bias goals, FRAME, RERUN, othering, gender socialization, racial bias, privilege, contact theory, cognitive bias, equity, and culture. How does the movie fit within a specific lens (or lenses) of diversity? (remember to cite your sources!)
  • YOUR STORY: Compare your own culture with the one/s portrayed in the film. What were the iceberg differences between this culture/religious beliefs and your own? Discuss your level of contact you had with this community (first experience, somewhat familiar, etc.)? Describe your single story related to this cultural group. Relate to your personal experiences, and outside research.
  • BIAS & STEREOTYPES: What are the bias and stereotypes targeted at this community? Cite your sources. What biases or pre-conceived beliefs? Are there any support groups or advocates specifically for this population? If so, please list. Cite all resources.
  • APPLICATION: How can you apply what you learned in your work with children? Specifically, what will you do differently as you work with children as a result of learning more about this community? How will you bring awareness of this community to your classroom/parents/staff or coworkers?

STEP THREE

Double Check Your Paper

  • Have you included all 6 sections? (summary, reflection, connection, your story, bias & stereotypes, application)
  • Do you have a cover page & a reference page?
  • Have you checked the APA guide?
  • Have you included LOTS of vocabulary from the course?
  • Did you make sure you used in-text citations when referring to class materials? (videos, research articles, lectures, weblinks, and the textbook)
  • Have you worked to avoid plagiarism? This paper must be original work and will be run through Turn It In.

Page count: Minimum: 2 >>FULL<< pages (note: If you need more space to meet the requirements, go for it!

DO NOT USE AI. NEEDS TO PASS AI DETECTOR THRU TURNITIN OR I WILL REFUND. NEED PROOF ATTACHED.

PLEASE DO NOT USE AI TO WRITE THIS. THIS NEEDS TO BE YOUR OWN WORK!

Now that we’ve reached the end of the semester, it’s a good time to sort out what we believe about equity and what impact that will have on our own personal actions. This Equity Statement is like a promise you make to yourself (and for the children and families you care for, even if they never read it) to commit to putting what you learned into practice.

*NOTE: THIS IS A MAJOR ASSIGNMENT- BE SURE TO TAKE THE TIME TO DEMONSTRATE WHAT YOU’VE LEARNED IN THIS CLASS 🙂

Activity Objectives

This activity is designed to support the following Learning Objectives:

  1. Identify and describe how student variability exists in differing ways including cultural, ethnic, intellectual, linguistic, racial, social, and special needs.
  2. Analyze various aspects of childrens experience as members of families targeted by social bias considering the significant role of education in reinforcing or contradicting such experiences.
  3. Assess the components of linguistically and culturally relevant, inclusive, age-appropriate, anti-bias approaches in promoting optimal learning and development.
  4. Demonstrate the ability to create environments to meet the needs of all children within educational settings for young children.

Instructions

STEP 1: Research

Search to find different personal, educational, and even corporate equity pledges/promises/statements. Find what you like about each one. Here are some that I found on a quick google search (note: this is not meant as an endorsement of any group posting their pledges/statement, only meant to serve as inspiration)

(scroll down to the Equity Values section for a simplified version)
