this is what my ta said: In broad terms, this is what the project is, from the guidelines:
“In your lab meeting during the final week of lab classes (the week of April 27th), you will be responsible
for presenting a PowerPoint to your lab section. This presentation is a chance for you to pick one of the
themes you found most interesting from the class, read a recent news article on this topic, critically
assess this article, and present your assessment to the other students in the lab. This exercise offers you
a chance to practice conveying your ideas through PowerPoint design and oral presentation. Here are
some basic guidelines:
You can choose any article so long as it pertains to the listed topics provided at the end of these
guidelines. The article should be long enough that it provides enough material for you to create a
PowerPoint and present an interesting discussion.
If I remember correctly, you chose an article about an earthquake. Although thats not on the list of topics, I still approved it because I feel like students should get the chance to present what they are interested in, and earthquakes are related to geology haha. But if you would like to change your topic at any point, just let me know!

Lab 13: PowerPoint Presentation Guidelines

guidelines. The article should be long enough that it provides enough material for you to create a
PowerPoint and present an interesting discussion.
CHOOSING AND SUBMITTING YOUR ARTICLE (2.5 points)
The article you choose should be from news media, rather than a scientific article, and it should be
recent (within the last 5 years at most). A list of topics is provided at the end of these guidelines. You
must select your article by Friday April 10th at 11:59 pm. To officially select a topic, take a screenshot of
the article and submit it through Brightspace with the article link. For any given lab section, news articles
may not be repeated, so the sooner you notify your TA with your choice, the more likely you are to get
your choice. If your article has already been selected by another student, youll need to pick again.
Submitting your article choice Brightspace by the end of the week of April 10th will earn you 2.5 points,
which will count as 12 of your quiz points in the week of April 27th. 12 point will be deducted from this
score for every day that your submission of an article is late beyond your respective deadline.
DESIGNING AND PRESENTING YOUR POWERPOINT (10 points)
Once you have confirmed your topic with your TA, you can then begin the process of translating your
article into a PowerPoint presentation. Other than a title slide, your presentation should consist of
exactly 5 content slides. Each content slide should have both words and at least 1 image. Avoid slides
that are only words. Avoid slides that are only an image. When using text, 36 pt font is a good, readable
size for a PowerPoint presentation. Dont go below 28 pt font. Your oral presentation of this PowerPoint
in class will be worth 10 points (10 of the 15 weekly exercise points) and will be evaluated on how well
you addressed the article with your PowerPoint design and oral presentation. You will have 5 minutes to
present your slides, so plan accordingly. Below is an outline of how you should structure your
PowerPoint. Note: How you distribute your speaking time amongst these slides is entirely up to you, and
certain slides may require far more speaking time to address than others. Some slides may require more
than one minute, whereas other slides may require less than one minute.
Title Slide: Provide the articles title, authors name, source of the article, and your name.
Slide 1: Introduce the topic of the article and any useful background information in general terms.
Slide 2: What about this article did you find interesting or relevant to yourself or for the course?
Slide 3: Explain the articles reasoning for writing about this topic. So, why write the article at all?
Slide 4: Explain the main thesis or main points that the article is trying to convey to readers.
Slide 5: Critically evaluate the main point(s) of the article, presenting your assessment of what aspects
you think the article got right, and what aspects the article might have overlooked.
SUBMITTING YOUR POWERPOINT FILE (2.5 points)
You will officially present your PowerPoint in the week of April 27th during your respective lab section.
Before that time comes, youll need to submit your PowerPoint to your TA so that they can compile
them all onto a single computer for the sake of efficiency. Regardless of lab section, all PowerPoint
presentations must be submitted on Brightspace to your TA by 11:59 pm on Friday, April 24th. You can
submit your presentation as a PowerPoint file or a PDF file where each slide is a single page of the PDF.
Submitting your PowerPoint presentation file before the given deadline is worth 2.5 points to you (2.5 of
the 15 weekly exercise points). If you submit your PowerPoint presentation file after the deadline of
11:59pm on Friday, April 24th, you will only receive 1 point for submission.
POINT BREAKDOWN
The table below shows the 3 primary actions that you will take with this PowerPoint presentation, the
weeks that these actions are taken, and the points that each action is worth. Make sure to read through
the sections above for each actions description because different actions occur on different dates for
the weeks specified.
