Part 1) This Writing Assignment is based on Chapter 5 and the Conclusion from Deborah Carr’s book – Aging in America.
Please answer the following questions in essay form for this Writing Assignment.
Opening Paragraph – describe how the U.S. aging population is growing at a rapid rate and your view on how prepared the U.S. is to provide needed care for aging people. You can use examples from the Ted Talks, documentaries or podcasts we have used in this course to support your argument.
Next 3 paragraphs – discuss Carr’s argument that three areas of policy change are needed to address the growing aging population in the U.S. – economic policies, healthcare policies and family and caregiver policies. Make sure to use some quotes from the chapter in this section but the quotes should not provide more text than your own writing. The quotes should be used to back-up or elucidate your own perspective in the writing.
Final paragraph – Choose one of the elements Carr discusses in the Conclusion as she looks to the future of aging issues in the U.S. Describe in detail the element and then provide your own response, insights, questions related to this element. Do you agree with her assessment? Why, or why not? Are there other elements that Carr is missing in her Conclusion?
This paper should be at least 3 full pages of writing, double-spaced with 10 point font, and preferably 4-5 pages.
Part 2) This Extra Credit opportunity is based on Patricia Kolb’s book, Understanding Aging and Diversity, Chapter 6.
Discuss in detail what is meant by Life Course Geronotology. Choose two scholars Kolb focuses on in this chapter and discuss how they use life course gerontology.
How do the approaches of these scholars’ differ from each other’s? What elements are similar, if any?
Finally, as you think back on the course, what, for you, have been your primary “aha” moments when something becomes clear that you had never considered or thought about before?
You should include 3 such learnings and fully explain each.
