Assignment Guidelines (from syllabus):
In the paper, you are to explicitly and directly use material from lectures, handouts, the required text, relevant websites, and your own independent library and field research. You are to select these assignments/ papers from the list at the end of this course outline. The length of the written work is dependent on the particular assignment. Papers are to be 2-5 pages long. They are to be typed and double-spaced. All material must be properly cited (), and direct quotation must be included as a page reference

Imagine you are tasked with investigating how ones views on the American National Anthem influences ones level of support for NFL players who kneel in protest of American treatment of African Americans, historically and today. What variables would you use to conduct this study? How might you operationalize them? What would be your sample? How would you work to remove bias from your study? How would you ensure that your findings would be both reliable and valid? (Read Sociology in Action Chapter 3) |

Think about the culture or the subcultures, in which you live and interact. Describe this culture: What is a norm that guides your behavior, is it a folkway or a more? A law? What are some aspects of the groups material culture? What values are held by the group? What kinds of beliefs that guide your behavior? Are there examples of folklore that is passed from older to newer members? What are the groups language patterns and how does it affect and reflect their perception of the world? What are some the symbols associated with this group? How is this culture changing? Give some possible explanation for the changes to the subculture that you are examining.
