Family Conflict and Intervention
Family conflicteither explicit or implicitcan develop as children enter adolescence. At this time, children begin to gain autonomy and a sense of self distinct from parents or caregivers, and may form ideas, beliefs, and values that directly oppose those of the family unit. Such conflict may be particularly present in families with a history of child abuse or neglect, parental substance use, or other trauma. Overt evidence of this conflict may arise in sessions when, for example, a teen confronts a parent, a parent diminishes or dismisses a teens felt experience, or a parent and teen argue about what has occurred. Social workers must have techniques to address and explore conflicts within family sessions.
In this Discussion, you review a session involving a social worker, a teen, and her estranged mother. You consider how you would manage the conflict and intervene appropriately.
To Prepare
- Review the Learning Resources on parental-adolescent conflict and on family practices and interventions.
- Access the Social Work Case Studies media and navigate to the Bradley Family case. View the video at the bottom of the page, which shows a social worker in conversation with Tiffani Bradley and her mother. Then, consider the conflict between Tiffani and her mother, how you might address it, and how you might further engage the family.
