Data Visualization

Please note: this is an individual assignment.

Assignment Description

This assignment will allow you to apply the principles of data visualization to a real-world dataset.

You will have to create a scatterplot and then interpret your graph.

Dataset: . This dataset contains multiple variables related to diamonds and their characteristics that you can analyze and visualize.

Instructions

Your task is to visualize with a scatterplot a potentially interesting relationship between two variables that is worth visually exploring.

Scatterplot Creation

Using the dataset provided, create a scatterplot that represents the relationship between diamond carats and prices (in USD).

As there is a huge number of registers, lets apply some filtering to plot just the best diamonds included in the dataset. The best diamonds in this dataset have Color D and Clarity VVS1. If you would like to learn more about what these codes mean, as well as the rest of the columns included in the dataset, this webpage provides very clear explanations education/.Links to an external site.

Add Cut to the color mark to add an additional analysis dimension to your chart.

Write a takeaway title that communicates something related to Ideal cut diamonds. What else could you do to provide more detailed information to the users of your chart regarding each one of the represented diamonds?

Your scatterplot should be clear, accurate, and easy to interpret. As part of your submission, you should include the following:

  • an explanation of your design choices, such as the color scheme you have chosen
  • a clear and thorough interpretation of what your scatterplot shows about the relationship between the studied variables

Remember, the key to a good scatterplot is not only in its aesthetic appeal but also in its ability to clearly and effectively communicate existing patterns, correlations, or outliers in the data it represents.

Submission

Please submit your scatterplot as a Tableau packaged workbook (.twbx file) and your written interpretation in PDF format.

Pts

This criterion is linked to a Learning OutcomeQuality and accuracy of the scatterplot

The scatterplot is correclty constructed with the correct axes and data points.

20 ptsFull PointsThe scatterplot is correclty constructed with the correct axes and data points.

10 ptsPartial PointsThe scatterplot is somewhat constructed but with the incorrect axes and data points.

0 ptsNo PointsThe scatterplot is not correctly constructed.

20 pts

This criterion is linked to a Learning OutcomeQuality and accuracy of the scatterplot

It accurately represents the relationship between the predefined variables.

20 ptsFull PointsIt accurately represents the relationship between the predefined variables.

10 ptsPartial PointsIt partially represents the relationship between the predefined variables.

0 ptsNo PointsIt doesn’t represent the relationship between the predefined variables.

20 pts

This criterion is linked to a Learning OutcomeDesign choices

The student makes effective design choices in Tableau such as:
– Right color scheme: one color for “Ideal” cut diamonds and gray for the rest
– Edited customized tooltips that enhance the readability and interpretability of the scatterplot

20 ptsFull PointsThe student make effective design choices in Tableau such as: – Right color scheme: one color for “Ideal” cut diamonds and gray for the rest – Edited customized tooltips that enhance the readability and interpretability of the scatterplot

10 ptsPartial PointsThe student partially created a design in Tableu with the right color scheme but without using tooltips for good readability.

0 ptsNo PointsThe student didnt use an effective design choice in Tableu.

20 pts

This criterion is linked to a Learning OutcomeDesign choices

The student justified their design choices such as the color scheme, etc.

20 ptsFull PointsThe student justified their design choices, such as the color scheme, etc.

10 ptsPartial PointsThe student partially justified their design choices, such as the color scheme, etc.

0 ptsNo PointsThe student didn’t justify their design choices, such as the color scheme, etc.

20 pts

This criterion is linked to a Learning OutcomeInterpretation of the scatterplot

The student provided a clear and thorough interpretation of what the scatterplot shows about the relationship between the two variables.

20 ptsFull PointsThe student provided a clear and thorough interpretation of what the scatterplot shows about the relationship between the two variables.

10 ptsPartial PointsThe student partially provided an interpretation of the scatterplot about the relationship between the two variables.
