(Padlet Question) Part 2

The Compromise that Wasn’t

What is a compromise? How would you define a compromise? Based on that definition, was the Compromise of 1850 really a compromise?

The Compromise of 1850 was a supposed solution to all of the nation’s problems concerning slavery and its possible expansion into the territories gained from Mexico. That said, the process by which the Compromise was passed in Congress raises some interesting questions. While Senator Henry Clay had hoped that all five elements of the Compromise could be passed as one bill with support from members of Congress from both the North and the South, that is not what happened. Instead, the bill failed to gain support from members from either sections of the country. In the end, each of the individual pieces were voted on as separate bills, and each was passed through the support of either northern congressmen (on the pieces they liked) or southern congressmen (the parts that favored slavery) and a few swing votes gathered by Sentor Stephen Douglas.
