In the areas of developing a greater self-awareness of myself, I have always wondered about who I am and what my identity is. In one of my discovery statements from chapter two, I became convinced that who I will be today is largely determined by my social interaction with the outside world. I have been intrigued by the Ideas of Eric Ericksons eight stages of psychosocial development. I have often found myself changing and evolving as I meet new friends and acquire new experiences. In his description of the last stage of psychosocial development of Integrity vs. Despair, I have come to realize how important it is for me to live life to the fullest and be present. I wont have any regrets later on in life. This has become part of my personality and how I see the world– see the world with a sense of optimism.
Sample paragraph on my future identity:
Some of the feedback that I received from my classmates on my identity development showed me that there are always room for change and there are several techniques to do that. My future identity will definitely have my open part of the self according to the Johari Window in chapter one. I also learned the importance of questioning my beliefs and values to restructure my future identity. This is what individuation is all about. Albert Ellis discusses in chapter 10 the difference between rational vs. irrational beliefs about ourselves. I envision my future identity to be free from all the body conditioning of the problematic emotions such as guilt, shame, and fear. Instead, I am planning on cultivating a greater degree of emotional intelligence which my primary goal in structuring my future identity.
