Discussion Board: A Class Recipe Book

Tita’s recipes become infused with magical, emotional & physical side effects in Like Water for Chocolate. This element of magical realism in Laura Esquivel’s book is representative of Tita’s powerful and overwhelming emotions.

Often, food is something we associate with emotional memories. Perhaps a certain cake reminds you of a special birthday you had as a child, or a specific dinner reminds you of a sad time in your life. Additionally, a birthday cake you bake for a child’s birthday might be made with love for that child. In Tita’s world, that love might have magical side effects. What would those side effects be?

Inspired by this, let’s assemble a book of recipes as a class. . .

1, One recipe that means a lot to me is homemade chicken alfredo pasta. It might sound simple, but its one of those meals that always brings back memories of being in the kitchen with family. I remember watching it being made and slowly learning how to do it myself. Now whenever I cook it, it feels familiar and comforting, like Im bringing a piece of those moments back. Its also one of those dishes I like making for other people because it just feels good to share something warm and filling.

The ingredients I use are chicken breast, fettuccine pasta, heavy cream, butter, garlic, parmesan cheese, salt, pepper, and a little parsley. First, I season the chicken and cook it in a pan until its nice and golden, then set it aside. While thats cooking, I boil the pasta until its soft. In the same pan, I melt butter and cook some garlic until it smells really good, then pour in the heavy cream and let it simmer. After that, I add parmesan cheese and stir it until the sauce turns smooth and creamy. I slice the chicken, add it back in, and mix everything together with the pasta.

If this recipe had a magical effect like in Like Water for Chocolate, I think it would make people feel instantly comforted. Like, no matter what kind of day someone was having, once they took a bite, theyd feel calmer and more at ease. If I made it while feeling happy or grateful, that feeling would pass into the food and make everyone else feel it too. It would turn a regular meal into something that helps people relax, connect, and just feel a little better.

2. One recipe that is really important to me is banana bread. It reminds me of being at home and baking with my family when we had extra bananas that were getting too ripe. I remember the kitchen smelling really good and everyone waiting to eat it once it came out of the oven. Its special to me because its simple, but it feels comforting and kind of like a family tradition even though we dont make it on a strict schedule.

The ingredients for banana bread are 3 ripe bananas, 1/3 cup melted butter, 1/2 cup sugar, 1 egg, 1 teaspoon vanilla extract, 1 teaspoon baking soda, a pinch of salt, and 1 1/2 cups flour. First, you preheat the oven to 350F. Then you mash the bananas in a bowl and mix in the melted butter. After that, you add the sugar, egg, and vanilla and stir it all together. Next, you mix in the baking soda, salt, and flour until everything is combined. Pour the batter into a greased loaf pan and bake for about 50 min. If this recipe had magical effects like in Like Water for Chocolate, it would change how people feel depending on the bakers emotions. If someone baked it while feeling happy, it would make anyone who eats it feel really calm and comfortable, like being at home. If it was made while someone was sad or stressed, it might make people feel those emotions too or think about their own memories. It could also bring people closer together because eating it would make everyone feel connected in some way.

3. One recipe that is very special to me is rice with chicken. This meal reminds me of my home and my family because we used to eat it together almost every week. My mom always made it, and the smell of the food brings me comfort and happiness. It also reminds me of times when we sat together, talked, and laughed. For me, this recipe is not just food, but a memory full of love and family connection.

The ingredients for this recipe are rice, chicken, onion, garlic, oil, salt, black pepper, and some spices. First, you cook the chicken with onions, garlic, and spices until it becomes soft. Then, you add water and let it boil. After that, you add the rice and let it cook on low heat until the rice is soft and ready. Finally, you can serve it with salad or yogurt.

If this recipe had magical effects like Titas recipes in Like Water for Chocolate, it would make people feel calm and happy. Anyone who eats it would remember their best memories with their family and feel loved and safe. It could also bring people together and make them forgive each other and forget their problems. This food would not only fill the stomach, but also heal the heart.

4. One recipe that is important to me is byrek, which is a food my family makes a lot. I am Albanian, so I grew up eating byrek at home with my parents and relatives. My mom makes it with cheese and sometimes spinach. I remember eating it on weekends and also when family came over. It always made the house feel warm and full. For me, byrek reminds me of family time and feeling comfortable at home. It is not just food, it feels like a memory too.The ingredients for cheese byrek are phyllo dough, white cheese (like feta), eggs, oil or butter, and a little milk. First, you mix the cheese, eggs, and milk in a bowl. Then you put oil or butter on a baking pan and place one layer of phyllo dough. After that, you add some of the cheese mix. You keep repeating the layers until finished. At the end, bake it in the oven around 375F until the top is golden brown. Then let it cool a little and eat. If this recipe was magical like Titas food in Like Water for Chocolate, I think it would make people feel close to their family again. Anyone who eats it would suddenly remember happy moments with people they love and feel calm and safe inside. Maybe it would even make people forgive each other and talk more openly. I think that would be a powerful and beautiful effect because food should bring people together.

5. One recipe that is very meaningful to me is a simple homemade chicken and rice dish that my family often makes. This recipe is special because it reminds me of comfort, family gatherings, and being taken care of, especially during times when someone wasnt feeling well. Growing up, this was the meal my family would prepare when we needed something warm and comforting, so it holds a lot of emotional value for me. It represents love, care, and togetherness in a very simple but powerful way.

The ingredients for this recipe include: chicken (usually bone-in pieces or shredded chicken breast), white rice, garlic, onion, olive oil, salt, pepper, and chicken broth. To prepare it, you first saut chopped onions and garlic in olive oil until they are soft and fragrant. Then, you add the chicken and let it cook until lightly browned. After that, you add the rice and stir it for a minute so it absorbs the flavor. Next, pour in the chicken broth, season with salt and pepper, and let everything simmer until the rice is fully cooked and the liquid is absorbed. Finally, you can shred the chicken (if needed) and mix it back in before serving.

If this recipe had magical qualities like Titas in Like Water for Chocolate, I think it would have the power to heal emotions. Anyone who eats it would feel a deep sense of comfort and calm, as if all their stress, sadness, or anxiety is gently lifted away. It would remind people of happy memories or create a feeling of being cared for, even if they are alone. This magical effect would come from the love and intention put into making the dish, turning a simple meal into something that emotionally restores and connects people.

6. A recipe that is meaninful to me is Pastel de Galleta, it is something made by hand & not purchasable nor common to find. I dont think I’ve actaully ever found it for sale at any local or large commerical store. For the longest time I was not very familiar with cake because this was what would get made for me, be it my grandma or mom apparently it was a recipe my mom got from hers. Although I dont consider it uniqely ours, I can’t say a birthday or special occasion is complete without it. It simply is different & loved by everyone who tries it.

to make it you must use, A box of galletas Maria ( you wont actually use them all but its most cost effective.) 1 can of evaporated milk & condensed milk. 8 Limes & vanilla extract & can of peaches. Im not so sure how much vanilla but you pretty much mix the milk cans & Lime with vanilla in a blender, you begin the process by neatly placing the cookies in rows. How they are arranged is relevant to the size of the plate so dont worry about perfect lines. After the first row you then pour some of this cream that you’ve blended. the ammount must be just enough to spread with a spoon. Repeat this step until you reach the top, at the top allow a slightly thicker layer of the cream for decoration sake. Once poured grab your can of peaches, slice if not pre sliced & with aesthetics line them across the surface. Once they are placed & the work is complete leave in the fridge overnight to allow it all to settle in.

The magic is going to greet you with the rows of cookies to which you’ll be reminded of family greeting and celebrating you on a birthday. You’ll taste the peaches & the lemon being so different but functioning together like your big family who may not seem like peaches and lemon work, yet they absolutely do.
