Description of this Assignment
Through this Assignment, you will begin learning about the concept called “mindset” by reading the first two chapters from American psychologist and Professor of Psychology Carol Dweck’s book Mindset. By reading the assigned chapters, you will be preparing for Essay 2 assignment as well. As you read the assigned chapters, please pay close attention to the following:
- The meaning of mindset,
- The two types of mindsets that exist and their meanings,
- The relationship these mindset have to concepts like intelligence, abilities, failure, effort, etc.
- The importance of the growth mindset; the downsides of not applying the growth mindset (of staying in the growth mindset),
- Any examples (especially of specific people Dweck writes about) that demonstrate the effectiveness of the growth mindset and the downsides of the fixed mindset,
- Any information on how the growth mindset can be developed.
Also pay attention to any ideas that Dweck shares that have caught your attention in general terms, that have made you realize something about yourself, anything that somewhat “spoke” to you.

Step #2
Read and annotate Chapters 1 and 2 (Supporting Material 2.2). (If you haven’t downloaded the book onto your device – laptop/Chromebook, please do so. You will be using the page numbers from the downloaded PDF in your writing.)
Notes:
- I do not expect you to print out all the assigned chapters to annotate as there are a lot of pages. You can annotate it through Adobe Acrobat, or you can take notes in your notebook as you read.
- As per Supporting Material 1.5, there are different things you can annotate for. At the minimum for this class, please annotate the following:

- Write definitions of unknown, unfamiliar words.
- Write brief summaries of each paragraph in the margin.
- Write personal connections and questions you have as you read.

Step #3.2
On that document, you will be answering the following for each Chapter 1 and Chapter 2:
- What is the purpose of the chapter? In other words, what is Dweck trying to accomplish by writing this chapter?
- Identify three quotations that caught your attention, and explain why each of them is significant to you personally.
- Use the following template:
- Quotation 1: “type the sentence verbatim inside quotation marks” (type the page number — based on the downloaded PDF).
- Context: Your reader doesn’t know what the context is for the quote. Share that with him or her.
- Significance of Quotation 1: blah blah blah (be thorough and specific; must be multiple sentences in length).
- Use the following template:

- Be thorough with your explanations — your reader doesn’t know you and your experiences, and he or she cannot read your mind.
- Please avoid a conversational tone in your writing (no “you,” “we,” or any form of those words; no direct questions).
- Please proofread your response before submitting it (Supporting Material 1.8).
