History Question

MUST BE ABLE TO ACCESS BOOK, I DO NOT HAVE ACCESS – Give Me Liberty 7th Ed. Vol 2.

All sources should be from the book, no outside sources and no AI please!!

Read/Review Chapter 15 from our textbook. Was Reconstruction a success or a failure? Pick one side and defend. In your response, consider land policy, key legislation during Presidential and Radical Reconstruction, southern politics, racial and political violence, and northern fatigue with Reconstruction. Be sure to make clear what you mean by success and failure. (Don’t forget – a good essay is always based on a central thesis/argument and is often subjective and persuasive).

Rules and Procedures

1.) BASE IT ON ONE OF THREE OPTIONS LISTED BELOW:

You are required to base your essay on one of the topics listed below. When writing your essays, you should be sure to argue one particular side of the argument posed.

2.) TEXTBOOK & CANVAS SOURCES ONLY

Do not use any outside sources when writing your essay. Your essays should be based on the assigned class readings and your opinions. If I discover you used an outside source or plagiarized, you will receive an F. 3.) WORK CITED (STILL) REQUIRED

Even though you will not be using outside sources, I would like you to provide a works cited page. You should also be sure to properly cite any quotes/ideas you take from the readings.

4.) FORMAT MATTERS

Be sure to follow the format closely in order to clearly articulate your thoughts & Ideas on the Question at Issue. Remember, a good essay is always based on a central thesis/argument and is often subjective and persuasive. Thus, you should be sure to incorporate your own ideas when and where appropriate. Defense Paragraphs require a Critical thinking Introduction Sentence following the three rules below (same as the discussion ones)

5.) EDITING COUNTS (Its even in the Rubric)

Proofread your essay. Points will be deducted for grammatical errors. Consider Flow as well.

6.) LENGTH IS IMPORTANT

Your essay must be a minimum of 750 words. Paragraphs are at least five sentences long. You will not receive a passing grade if you fall short of this requirement.

Feel free to look over the rubric below to help better understand the scoring.

8.) NOT JUST ASKING FOR HISTORY

Be sure not to write only history but how the information proves the main argument. That is the key to a good persuasive argument/ grade.


FORMAT: Written & Visual

Be sure to include an opening, introductory paragraph in which you state your thesis. Then use the body of your essay to provide evidence from the chapter to support that thesis. Remember that questions like this have no single correct answer. It is best to recognize that there might be developments that contradict your answer, but make the case that on balance they are outweighed by factors in support of your argument. End by writing a clear conclusion to your essay.

INTRODUCTION PARAGRAPH

  • Requirement #1: Provides the seven ID categories regarding the “Question at Issue.”
    • The introduction paragraph has a job to do. Inform the audience of the QUESTION AT ISSUE by providing the seven ID categories regarding the Question at issue.
    • Example – The sentence below provides the three of the seven ID categories regarding the cold war ( WHAT, WHO & WHEN for the cold war)
    • “The Cold War was a period of geopolitical tension between the United States and the Soviet Union and their respective allies, the Western Bloc and the Eastern Bloc between the years of 1947 – 1991.”
  • Requirement #2: Paragraph = minimum five sentences long & Flows well
    • The introduction paragraph should be at least five sentence long and flow well (ie – NOT CHOPPY)
  • Requirement #3: Ends with Properly formatted thesis statement at the end of the Introduction Paragraph
    • Format = One Clear Argument with three categories/reasons to defend the argument in one sentence)
    • Example “Creamy Peanut butter is better than Chunky Peanut butter because (A) of the Texture (B) its Nutrition characteristics & (C) the taste
  • Next Level Requirement: Provides specific example to help explain WHAT the topic/question at issue is.
    1. Example – If the question was asking about the Roman Colosseum, consider a modern specific examples to help the audience understand WHAT the Roman Colosseum is. Perhaps Raymond James Stadium (football stadium in Tampa).

DEFENSE PARAGRAPHS

  • Requirement #1: Starts with a Critical Thinking Introduction Sentence
    • Start the Defense paragraph with an introduction sentence that clearly articulates your analysis.
    • In doing so it helps the audience of the speaker “not get lost” with all the information (& our learning goals)
    • FORMAT (One sentence containing all three [3] components
      • Restate the main argument /claim stated in the thesis Statement (not the entire statement. Claim part only)
        • IE – One way Creamy Peanut butter is better than crunchy peanut butter ……”
      • State which category (from the thesis statement) the paragraph will expand on.
        • IE – is due to the texture of creamy peanut butter ..
      • State how the specific example(s) support the main argument/claim.
        1. IE “…is easier to spread on sandwiches.”
  • Requirement #2 – Information to support
    • Be sure to include information that supports your argument. Not just “history” but also how that info supports the main argument.
  • Requirement #3 –Length & Flows well
    • The introduction paragraph should be at least five sentence long and flow well (ie – NOT CHOPPY)

CONCLUSION PARAGRAPH

  • Requirement #1: Restates the entire thesis statement (preferably re-worded)
  • Requirement #2: Restates the specific evidence provided.
  • Requirement #3 Restates HOW the specific evidence supports the main argument.
  • Requirement #4: Ends with “a Final thought” or a thinking question for the audience to contemplate

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

  1. Requirement #1: Two Examples from text
    • Your argument must be supported by two works of poetry, painting, or other form of art found in the first three chapters.
    • Your post must include a brief examination of the two works you choose
  2. Requirement #2: Two quotes from the text.
    • and at least two excerpts/sentences from anywhere in the book. These excerpts should support your argument.
