Scenario
You have just made it through your first year as a psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner (PMHNP) at a large hospital. Unfortunately, many of your coworkers have fallen sick with the flu. With multiple clinical instructors at home, too, your hospital is attempting to meet students needs (and spark their interest in psychiatry). Your manager begs you to precept a BSN student for the day, and you agree. Today is the students first day at clinical. The student tells you, We were going to talk about the psychiatric assessment today. Before seeing patients with the student, you decide it is necessary to explain the psychiatric assessment.
Instructions
Record a video of your explanation. In your video, make sure to look into the camera and present as though you are actually in front of the student. Remember, your audience (the BSN student) has some medical knowledge but is not an expert in psychiatry.
In your video, be sure to include the following:
- Describe the elements of the psychiatric assessment
- Explain the clinical interview, including suggested techniques and how the interview differs with a child/adolescent versus an adult
- Discuss the role of the psychiatric assessment in determining a diagnosis
