Choosing the right instructional strategies can greatly affect students’ learning outcomes in mathematics. Effective strategies can help students develop a strong foundation in mathematical concepts, enhance their problem-solving skills, and cultivate a positive attitude toward the subject. High-leverage practices (HLP) provide teachers with a set of research-supported strategies that offer a framework to plan, implement, and assess instruction in a way that maximizes student learning. By integrating HLPs into their teaching repertoire, educators can make informed decisions about which strategies are most suitable for teaching mathematics to students with mild and moderate disabilities.
For this assignment, complete the Effective Mathematics Strategies Across Grade Levels template. In this template you will include the following:
- Mathematics standard for each grade band (K-5, 6-8, 9-12): Choose one specific math standard from your states OHIO mathematics standards that you would like to focus on for this assignment. The standard should align with a grade within the noted grade band.
- Measurable objective: Develop a measurable objective for the chosen math standard. Your objective should clearly state what students will be able to accomplish and how it will be measured. Ensure that the objective is specific, observable, and attainable.
- Evidence-based mathematical strategies for each objective: Research and identify at least two evidence-based strategies that can be utilized to effectively teach the chosen math standard to students with a specific learning disability in the area of math as well as other disabilities that could affect their learning of mathematical concepts.
- HLP (High-Leverage Practices) for each strategy: Identify an HLP and explain how it correlates with each strategy you have chosen.
Reflection
In 250-500 words reflect on the following:
- The significance of selecting evidence-based strategies for teaching the chosen math standards.
- Research professional development opportunities centered around professional math standards, research, current technology, and contemporary best practices of math education. Choose one opportunity and discuss how the strategies shared in the professional development can enhance student learning and the importance of ongoing professional development for math educators.
Support the assignment with a minimum of three scholarly resources.
